What do you think of the idea of having a special type of marriage which is contracted to last only a certain period, say 3 years, 5 years, 10 years. Longer than that would be a regular marriage. At the end of the contract, if both parties agree, it can be extended or converted in a regular marriage.
The idea is for people to gain the insurance and legal benefits of marriage without having to go through the huge cost of a divorce later.
So, are you going to sign up?

Yeah, that’s a terrible idea.
The most difficult aspect of divorce is property division. Couples gain savings, incur debts and invest in real estate and businesses together. It’s unravelling that whole mess that causes divorces to be long, expensive and complicated.
Oh, and let’s not forget visitation, custody and support.
Your short-term marriage contract idea does nothing, nothing, to address any of these problems. They all still exist and are all just as difficult and complex in a “short term” marriage.
But keep thinking.
