What she ought to do is research what similar jobs pay, to get an idea of the salary range.

The general response, if you can get away with it, is to answer: “My salary requirements depend on the opportunities available, and other benefits offered by the position.”

If that isn’t sufficient, the fallback is: “My range would be between x and y [make the range quite big], depending on the nature of the job, its responsibilities, and benefits offered.”

You really don’t want to go beyond that in any case. Name a number that’s too high, and you take yourself out of the running. Name a number that’s too low, and either you’ve “cheated” yourself, or you’ve taken yourself out of the running by appearing to be too inexperienced/underpaid to qualify for the position.

There’s a saying in negotiations that “The first person to name a number loses.” That’s something of an overstatement, but has a lot of truth to it. So it’ll be difficult to get the recruiter to make a concrete offer.

Your friend can always try to turn it around and ask the recruiter what the salary range is. She’d explain, “I certainly don’t want to waste your time if we’re not in the same ballpark.”

    Hope that helps.

You first need to find out what country they’d be moving to. A few European countries will be much more expensive than most cities in the US (maybe excluding Manhattan). These are the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Germany. In Sweden taxes are extremely high.
Once you know that then it’ll be much easier to negotiate the terms and package…
To obtain a firm offer just state your great interest in the position and how your past experience and education would enable you to contribute significantly (give examples and elaborate) to this position but that obviously it would be futile for you to look into this position without a strong commitment (i.e.solid offer) on their part.
