What is my legal standing regarding house furniture?

furniture for flats

My house is furnished with my former housemates furniture – the sofa, chairs and a bed all belong to him. He moved out one year ago allowing us to continue using the furniture and my new housemates and I have been making use of it since. I knew that one day he may want it back. The problem is I received a call from him this morning saying that he would like to collect all his furniture for his new flat on Tuesday.

I think this is very short notice as none of us are in any position to buy new beds or sofas.

Are we able to legally refuse his request?

What advice would you give?
I thought this was the case.

Please note, I do not want to refuse indefinately, but would like just a little more time.

No you cannot refuse. Its his furniture, he lent it to you, now he is entitled to remove it.

I think it is his legally, but why don’t you make him an offer for it?
It’s probably not worth collecting, being as all your other housemates have used it too.
