eg, forget where you parked your car, a phone number, but we can remember things that happen years ago?

Because I was too mad when I parked the car to remember where I parked it!
The phone numbers are hard to remember especially when I can’t find a pen.

When we sleep our brains kind of do some filing.

Think of things stored in short term memory being lose pieces of paper sitting on a desk. When we sleep, our brain puts them in an appropriate folder in a filing cabinet, where they can easily be found later. Once they’re in the filing cabinet, they’re commited to long-term memory.

While the pieces of paper are still on the desk, they’re still prone to be blown around the room by a draught coming in the window, or be ruffled or disorganised while you search for other things in short term memory. Or buried by lots of other pieces of paper.

Every night, our brains sort through the loose pieces of paper on the desk and put what needs to be kept in the filing cabinet and throw the rest out. Sometimes the brain makes the mistake of throwing away the wrong pieces of paper.

This is one of the main purposes of dreaming.

Most of the time people who have memory disorders have brains that don’t put things in the filing cabinet anymore. They can retrieve pieces of information already filed in the cabinet from a while back but are unable to put anything new in the filing cabinet. A lot of the time their brains just throw everything in their short term memory out every night.

Signal Detection Theory- It is a method of distinguishing sensory stimuli that takes into account strengths, setting, physical state, mood, and attitude.

Hence certain things stand out because of the situation at present make them worth remembering to you.

Parking your car usually doesn’t make you concentrate or think very hard about what you’re doing. Boom found a parking space time to go inside. Then when you come out you forget because of all the factors involved.

In essence, depending on the influence of other factors, you determine how meaningful some information is. Emotional, Physical and Mental factors come in to play.

You might want to really remember that girl’s number, but if you are having a stressful day, or become preoccupied with something else it might distract your mind from keeping the information and logging it as useful.
